We Need YOU!

To All Sunshine Chapter Individual and Corporate Members,

Your Sunshine Chapter continues to excel at providing support to Soldiers and their families here in Central Florida.  Our Chapter success has always been possible because we have have some of the greatest volunteers as members and friends.  A few of the core volunteers make up the Executive Committee and collectively guide the Chapter in executing programs on behalf of the entire membership and for the Soldiers and families that we help throughout the year.

As our new operational year gets underway we would like to extend an opportunity to members of the Chapter to get involved in the planning and execution of the programs.  Additionally we want we want members to consider more active roles in the Executive Committee in the Chapter.  Our business meetings are on the second Wednesday every month at 7:30 AM and the meetings generally last about 90 minutes.  I am encouraging all of our Executive Committee members to invite a fellow member, new member or prospective member to attend one of our meetings.  In addition to attending in person we do have an audio dial-in capability so that you can participate if you can’t attend in person.

Below are just some of the major events we are supporting this year.  Also below are the names of our current Executive Committee members and event coordinators that you can contact for further information.  Stay up-to-date with Chapter activities by checking out our website, www.ausa-sunshine.org and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Major Events Supported by the Sunshine Chapter:

AUSA National Meeting – 12-14 October, Washington D.C.  The Sunshine Chapter will have a hospitality suite in the Marriott Hotel on Monday, 12 October and Tuesday,13 October.  If any member plans to attend the Meeting we could use a few hours of your time to help us host and monitor meetings in the room.  Contact De Voorhees, Kevin Dietrick or Debbie Berry if you have some time and would like to help.  Additionally Corporate members are always encouraged to be sponsors.

Operation Holiday Cheer – Tentatively scheduled for 7 November and we are looking for someone to help set up and coordinate the event.  Volunteers gather, pack and ship care packages to deployed Central Florida Soldiers.  This year the 2-124th Florida National Guard is deployed to Africa so we expect a high demand. Additionally we coordinate with AAAA (Army Aviation Association of America) the giving of gift cards in holiday food baskets to deserving families at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  We have a lot of volunteers wanting to work this year but we need someone to lead the effort.  Contact our Operations Officer, Dee Jones or Wells Barlow if this is an effort you would like to support.

Veterans Day Parade – This year the Chapter is supporting the Orlando Veterans Day Parade, 14 November, in two ways.  First, volunteers are needed to help in the administration part of the parade and second, members are needed to march in the parade along with Cadets from the University of Central Florida.  Contact Dee Jones for further information.

Scholarship Program (Awards and Recognition) – Craig Langhauser, our VP for Awards and Recognition will be leaving Central Florida for Utah in October so we need someone to run the scholarship program and the Junior ROTC recognition program.  Contact Craig or Kevin Dietrick for more information.

AUSA Scholarship Golf – Usually occurs the second week of May each year and we always need administrative support to set up the event and to work special activities on some of the holes.  Jeff Moss or De Voorhees are good contacts for this event.

Armed Forces Celebration – Also occurs in May and is a Joint Service event at the Orlando Citrus Club (an AUSA Corporate Member).  Jan Drabczuk is the point of contact.

Army Ball – June 18, 2016, Rosen Centre Hotel.  Tony Krogh is the ball chair this year and planning is already underway.  The 2015 Army Ball was an outstanding success and we plan to do even better next year.  It takes a large group of volunteers to pull it off so contact Tony if this is something you might want to work in 2016.

These are just a few of the events and activities that your Sunshine Chapter manages or works each year.  In addition to these larger events we also have Special Event Breakfasts or Lunches, three or four General Membership Meetings and a large number of co-sponsored events that we squeeze into our busy calendar.  The Sunshine Chapter stays active, engaged and always supportive of Central Florida Soldiers and their families.  If you would like to help please contact one of the committe members below and volunteer your time and energy and work with a great organization.
