CSM (Ret) Harry Shakes was born in Cuba 94 years ago today but moved to Jamaica when he was 6 years old. He came to America at the age of 18 and then when into the Army even though he wasn’t a US citizen.
He was on the initial wave of the invasion of Omaha Beach on D-Day where he was wounded, Then he served in the Korean War where again he was wounded. He also served in Vietnam and retired as a Command Sergeant Major.
Went to work in the US Embassy in Iran with the Shah when America and Iran were still allies.
CSM Shakes said the greatest day of his life was in 1955 when he became a United States citizen!
AUSA Sunshine Chapter’s VP Daila “Dee” Espeut-Jones stopped by to wish CSM(R) Shakes a Happy Birthday!
Many of you will remember him from this year’s Army Ball.
